Tonight and Tomorrow

Tonight Quizmaster Pete has Southpark Quizzo, 8pm on the 2nd floor. One of the answers is bound to be "Cheesy Poofs". You will have to figure out the other 39 answers yourself, so bring a team to help.

Tomorrow is Karina's last shift a for a while, so please stop in say "see you later". She will back in about three months after her daughter is born. 10am - 6pm.

Draft Beer Update

Lost Abbey Devotion replaced Dock Street Saison Brun. This beer is a gentle Belgian blonde style beer with an abbey influence. I recall us having this on tap quite recently. I am wrong; we last tapped one in September of 2009, almost two years ago. I suppose I recall rereading the description recenly before ordering it.

Arcobrau Zwickl replaced Samuel Adams East-West Kolsch. In my mind I can hear John Lennon say "Ein, zwei, zickle dickle" before launching into some song. A little Googling informs me I am thinking of "I Don't Wanna Face It" from Milk and Honey. The actual line is "Un, deux, ein, zwei, hickle pickle! Say youre looking for a place to go". Sorry for that distraction of how my brain works (or doesn't), onto the beer.

The importer's Website tells us "Traditionally there was only one 'zwickl' in the brewery and it was held by the one with the greatest authority … the Brew Master. So only he could unlock the finest brews, including the unfiltered lager. Naturally cloudy and unfiltered – Flavor with crisp finish".

So WTF is a zwickl, a key?

Let us Google. This leads us to a Wikipedia page that's written in German. Happily Google offers to translate it for us. What results is mostly gibberish. What I get after reading it twice is that a zwickl must be a tap used to draw some of the fermenting beer to see if it is ready. Or maybe it's a cup.

Google Images gives us a lot of varied images but nothing to really tell us WTF a zwickl actually is. Who, most definitely. What, not so much. WTF, very much.

In the USA this type of fresh, unfiltered beer is known as a kellerbeer. Usually we only see pilsners here released in an unfiltered version (Victory and Sly Fox are two around here that occasionally put out a keller pils). This one from Acrobrau sounds like it might be more of a helles than a pilsner. Though Acrobrau is in Moos, Eastern Bavaria, not far from the Czech Republic, so who knows maybe it is more of a pilsner than a helles. What I do know that I will be having one later this evening.
