This Week at The Grey Lodge Pub
This week's Beer Season beer of the week is Pilsner Urquell. Pilsner Urquell is truly an icon. From the town of Pilsen in Czech Republic, this is THE iconic pilsner. It's also the original pilsner, the very first one. The word urquell translates as "original source".

Pilsners are gold lagers that feature soft water and Saaz hops. Pilsner was the first ever pale lager beer, so every pale lager in the world today (about 80% of all beer brewed) trances its lineage back there.

Pilsner Urquell is now owned by SABMiller. SAB stands for South African Breweries, the global beer conglomerate that eventually ate up Miller, and gobbled up Urquell along the way. If you want to read more, the short history of Pilsner Urquell at Wikipedia is very interesting.

Lew Bryson informs us that Urquell still makes a small portion of the beer the old school way to make sure their beer made the modern way is identical. I can't recall the last time I  drank this iconic beer, so I'm interested in trying it again to see how it compares to the numerous wonderful pilsners that are made right here in Pennsylvania.

Tonight (Monday) is New Years Eve or as we call it at the Grey Lodge, just a normal night. We get our ya-yas out the rest of the year. December 31st is a night to take it calm. Dress for comfort, not to impress, but wear your glad rags if you want. No outrageous cover charge. In fact no cover charge at all. Our beer line-up will be our usual world class selection, with possibly some Christmas leftovers. The TVs will be on as will the jukebox. Knock yourself out. The dart area will be a dart area not a dance floor. Shoot away. Our kitchen will be open as usual. So if you find yourself at a sucky party and want to bail, stop on by; we'll be here. If you find yourself at a great party, hey have fun; we’ll be here the other 364 nights of the year too.

Wednesday is a special year end quizzo with Quizmaster Chris 3. As usual Quizzo is Wednesdays, 8pm, on our 2nd floor.

On Friday, we are going to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. The Epiphany is the Feast of the Three Kings, also known as Little Christmas and the 12th day of Christmas. It is celebrated on January 6th every year. Fridays work best for us, so please join us in the celebrating the feast of the Epiphany a few days early.

We will cook up a bunch of Puerto Rican food. We’ll have something special for anyone who comes dressed as one (or all three) of the magi. The beer will be gift and king themed. Epiphany Draft Beer List: Bruery Five Golden Rings, Port Gift of the Magi, Starr Hill The Gift, Victory Mad King’s Weisse, Victory Storm King.

This weekend, as usual, we serve brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 3pm. Big Dan will have a brunch special but we don't know what it will be yet. Our regular menu is also available.

Meanwhile over at Hop Angel, they are going all out for tonight with a crazy four course dinner for just $35, and other things planned for this week as well. This Week at Hop Angel Brauhaus.

Draft Beer Update
Corsendonk Christmas Ale (30 liter) replaced Affligem Noel (20 liter). Corsendonk is the third of a run of four Belgian Christmas ales. Depending on how things play out, that run might get interrupted to get Bruery Five Golden Rings tapped for Friday's Feast of the Epiphany.

Philadelphia Kenzinger replaced Duck Rabbit Milk Stout.

Goose Island Christmas replaced Manayunk Monk from the Yunk. GIX, as I like abbreviate it, was a very pleasant surprise, definitely a lot going on in a very unique but perfectly beery sort of way.
